There Goes The Neighborhood

Many centuries ago when settlers first started to colonize the Americas the encounter people who they believed to be "Indians". When Columbus and his expedition ran into the native people when they first settled many many years ago, they seemed to be looking to take advantage of them. They recognized the native people as one that provides great care. I seem to think that it was in their nature and culture to be very hospitable. When the foreigners settled on their land, instead of fighting or defending themselves they put up a somewhat nurturing front. I believe the natives were frightened of the newcomers and didn't know what to do so they decided to conform to the needs of the settlers. They seemed to want to trade and explore new possibilities. They were curious as to who and what these new people were and they let curiosity get the best of them. Their sweet nature and morals allowed them to have open eyes towards the settlers and what they were willing to do to them.

  1. Imani, I truly agree with your opinion on why it was so simple for the explorers to invade Native's land and take over. It simply was not in their nature to be hostile. So instead they let settlers take advantage of them. But I can't stop myself from wondering what would happen if the Natives scared them away, did not trade their things, or maybe even killed them off. Surely things would be different, but how?

  2. I disagree that curiosity got the best of the natives, as they had originally avoided the colonizers. Essentially the settlers had forced themselves onto the natives. Although, I do agree that the natives had treated the colonizers kindly, due to fear and hospitality was just part of their culture that lead to their downfall.

  3. I don't believe the curiosity of the natives got the best of them. I believe that the natives were just being hospitable but the settlers turned on them. The natives were only being kind and they, in turn, got taken advantage of.
